DBS Fox mural

Wednesday, August 18th, 2021

One of the two murals created for DBS bank office in Central, Hong Kong. The brief was to create murals which are elegant and graceful. The Fox was created to echo the theme and bring a graceful touch to the conventional office environment. The mural is done in black and orange to create foreground and background. A fairly simple mural, yet it serves its purpose. I also treated this mural as an opportunity to practise different ways to draw hair/fur, trying to bring a certain structure to it instead of just flaring out the lines. Smaller murals are always good as a way to explore new techniques without worrying too much about the end result. All these little experiences will accumulate and eventually serve a greater purpose.

Starbucks Hong Kong Window Murals

Wednesday, August 18th, 2021

A quick project for Starbucks office in Hong Kong, to create artwork on the window for three meeting rooms. Each room has a theme to work with: Tiger, elephant and bird. The objective of the project is to create artwork on the window, yet keeping a substantial amount of transparency. My mural works are mainly detail oriented, and finding the balance inbetween is the trick for this project. ⁣

Compared with the DBS project in which I created highly detailed artwork, the amount of details for this project need to be restrained, yet still need to reflect my personal style. Took me quite a while to figure out the right amount of details for the windows. Often when we are so used to creating in a certain way, in my case it would be detail oriented, switching to the opposite side can be super challenging. I have always admired artists who could create simple, yet beautiful artwork. How simple strokes can trigger so many imaginations within one’s mind. ⁣

I have taken this opportunity to experiment my way of “simplicity”. How much detail I can let go while people could still recognise those work were created by me. It was a wonderful experience. My ultimate goal in art and design is to be recognisable even when work are done in many different ways, and the audience recognise my work not by my techniques, but by the soul within. Long way to go.⁣

Starbucks TownHall mural Hong Kong

Mural comissioned by Starbucks Hong Kong.

One of the longest murals I have drawn, it aims to convey the long history and heritage of Starbucks as a brand and as a pioneer in coffee roasting industry. The mural is a reinterpretation of the Siren of the brand logo, while the crown is made of flowers representing all the different countries around the globe which the brand has located. The mural aims to act a warm welcome when entering the office, while display the heritage of the brand.

[Solitude – Snow Leopard – Reconnection]

The latest mural I did in Hong Kong. Located in Central, Hong Kong, and it will remain here for a minimum of two months. This wall is provided by La Cabane, and it’s a rotation wall that artists can apply all year round. I applied this with the help from a fellow artist in Hong Kong @neillhw, who was supposed to paint with me but later was occupied with work and I got to paint the entire wall on my own. I took this as an opportunity to have a break from commercial ties and just painted whatever I want.

To be honest I didn’t have much concepts before painting the wall, but the first thing that came into my mind soon after was snow leopard. The initial sketch only consisted of one snow leopard, the one in the middle, but others were added later as further practice of its hair and facial forms. I admire the gracefulness of the creature and the solitude it seems to possess, being surrounded by snowy mountains and harsh terrains. Graceful yet fearless, seems perfectly content at its territory. Somehow it reflects my inner desire of being content within harsh environments, graceful yet fearless.

There is a very subtle progression of ways to demonstrate its hair and forms, probably only noticeable by me, but already it’s a huge step for me. Mural is a great way to rediscover and reconnect with oneself. Life to me seems to be a journey of rediscovery, evaluation and reconnection.

Thank you everyone who helped me throughout the week and thank you La Cabane for giving freedom to paint what I want with no compromises. It’s a good break from commercial murals allows me to review my work and myself.
